Field Trip Instructional Sessions Offered!
We offer group instructional sessions at the Museum BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. These sessions are designed for visiting
school children in groups of less than 30. For groups 3rd grade and older, our docents can explain how a
steam locomotive works, railroad safety, and identify different types of railroad cars. For younger children, train
stories can be read and railroad songs can be sung in our “Holden’s Corner” Learning Area. For older students and adults,
we can take a walking tour of the Museum and explain the progression of passenger car tours and steam engines.
These sessions will last between 10 and 30 minutes and are lead by a Volunteer Docent or Foundation Staff Member.
The depth of information presented will be tailored to the age of the children, their ability to interact with the docent,
and their attentiveness and behavior.
Reservations for any school visit can be made with the City of Los Angeles Travel Town office, (323) 662-5874, between
10am and 2pm. You must also make a reservation for the docent led session with The Museum Foundation at least two weeks
before your scheduled visit by calling 323-668-0104, extension 13. Donations must be received one week prior to the tour.
You will receive a call back to confirm the size of your group, age of students, etc.
Admission to the Museum is always free. For a docent led session, the Foundation requests a $25 donation per session for
groups of up to 30 students and adults, and we ask that larger groups donate $1.00 per person attending the session/tour.
This donation will allow us to further develop our educational outreach programs and continue our docent programs in the
future. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and credit cards are accepted over the phone at the reservation number,
323-668-0104, extension 13.
