We have several student volunteer opportunities including:
Track Building Crew
You will be building track at Travel
Town, moving rail, driving spikes, setting ties, etc. You will be working
outside. This is heavy work. Must be able to follow directions. You must
be willing to work as a team member. You will learn how to build track
the "old-fashioned" way, as well as observing the modern technologies of
pneumatic spike drivers and backhoes.
Tour Guide / Docent Interpreters
Our Docent Interpreters speak for the trains by leading
tours through and around our historical equipment and passenger cars. They bring
history to life with lectures, stories and by answering questions from curious children.
We have Docent Training Seminars twice a year, and encourage our Docents to take part in
this incredible educational opportunity. Certificates are given at the completion of each course.
Restoration Staff
We have several dedicated volunteers who are working to restore some of our exhibit cars to their former glory. If you have
skills in carpentry, refinishing woodwork, plumbing or electrical systems, please ask to be referred to our
restoration project leaders. (If you have none of these skills, but still want to help, please ask...
We will train you!)
Rust Prevention Team Member
You will be removing dust, dirt, cobwebs and debris from our historic rolling stock.
In our open-air environment, this chore is an integral aspect of preserving these important pieces of history.
Though we do provide masks, gloves and even goggles, his is outdoors and can get very dusty. Using long handled
soft brushes, rags, and specific tools you will learn how to safely conserve and protect historical artifacts
that are large and to be maintained.
Gardening and Outdoor Spaces Team
We need Gardeners to help eliminate the weeds yet tend to the flowers in our public areas. We also rake and remove dry leaves from our public spaces and restoration areas. Must like working outdoors. You will learn various gardening techniques. You will be helping to keep this portion of Griffith Park beautiful.
Cooperative Programs
We can provide hours for high school service learning projects, RSVP projects, or community service projects as required by law. Please let the administrator know of your needs at the orientation.
Group Participation
Do you belong to a Boy Scout Troop? Girl Scouts? 4-H? Key Club? Church group? The Travel Town Museum Foundation welcomes large groups of volunteers to do major grounds cleanup and locomotive washing! It's a great way for your group to volunteer to help the City of Los Angeles!
